Television actress currently starring in Samantha Who? Christina Applegate already knew quite a bit about breast cancer before her recent breast cancer diagnosis. She has watched her mother Nancy Priddy undergo repeated treatments for breast cancer. Applegate knew she needed to be tested for the BRCA1 gene. She knew she needed to be vigilant with annual breast cancer screenings. And because she knew all these things, her breast cancer was diagnosed before the cancer had a chance to spread.

Applegate chose to undergo a prophylactic double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. In an interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Robert, she says, “I’m going to have the best boobs in the nursing home.” Her sense of humor emerges through the inequitable reality of a cancer diagnosis. “Sometimes, you know, I cry. And sometimes I scream. And I get really angry. And I get really upset, you know, into wallowing in self-pity sometimes. And I think that it’s all part of the healing.” It is when you can laugh again that you know somehow you are going to be alright.

Applegate is launching an organization to provide BRCA1 screening and MRI’s to women who cannot afford to take advantage of early breast cancer screening.
