How to install a 500GB hard drive in your PlayStation 3
Submitted by videogame2play
If you would like to add some serious storage space to your PlayStation 3 here is a step by step guide to installing a Samsung SpinPoint M60S HM500LI.
Step #1:
Purchase the Samsung SpinPoint M60S HM500LI 500GB hard drive (currently available online for around $220 and that includes shipping - note link to the right). Important note: This is the only 500GB internal hard drive that will fit into the PS3. Use the PS3’s Backup function to transfer saves and other content to a USB drive.
Step #2:
Unplug the PS3 and ground yourself. Open the PS3’s hard drive access port, located on the side of the unit, with your fingernail.
Step #3:
Carefully unscrew the blue screw using the correct screwdriver bit (Philips Precise) using gentle pressure, taking care not to strip the screw. Pull out the metal hinge, and slide the hard drive tray out.
Step #4:
Unscrew the four screws that attach the hard drive to the metal tray, and remove the old hard drive (place old drive in anti-static bag).
Step #5:
Attach the new Samsung 500GB hard drive to the tray, replacing the four screws from the previous step. Slide the hard drive tray back into the PS3 port, and snap the metal hinge back into place, then replace the blue screw. Close the access port, power up your PS3, and replace the date stored on your USB drive. Voila — you’re done! Enjoy your massive storage space.

The comment about the Samsung being the only 500GB HDD that will fit is NOT true. This one fits as well and is a much cooler and faster drive.

how you ground yourself?

I tried installing a 500 gb drive in my system and had problems with the system being significantly slower once I started putting files on it(ie. video and music). I switched over to a 320 and it has been smooth sailing ever since.

I ground myself on taps, basically any metallic object the goes to ground. Just make sure you don’t drag your feet on the carpet on the journey back from wherever you ground yourself.

boojuw-To Ground yourself you will need to purchase an antistatic bracelet or could go for the heaper optin and just touch a radiator
as 2009 is releasing many great games for the ps3 i will soon have to upgrade my 160gb hardrive to the much bigger size off 500gb/413gb free when formatted
Great article

You can ground yourself by touching a metal water tap, usually.

Yes the comment about it being the only one is VERY wrong!
Seagate makes a 7200 RPM 500GB 16MB Cache 2.5″ Drive. Even faster than the Samsung or WD drives.
It is also about 100$ cheaper here.

For Enforcer, yes Seagate makes a 7200 rpm hard drive that’s 500gb. However, if you read the articles on upgrading your ps3, they say a 7200 rpm hard drive is not recommended, as it might cause your ps3 to overheat. Most recommend a 5400 rpm. And not every single hard drive is guaranteed to work. Thus ppl recommending certain hdd’s instead of just saying throw in any old hdd.
And jason, I’m personally a fan of the western digital. But that might just be a matter of personal preference
