A Golfer Getting Five Hole-in-Ones in One Week is as Believable as Spiderman
A friend emailed me the supposedly incredible luck bestowed upon an Illinois golfer who got five hole-in-ones in one week. For those of us who walk the hallowed links on a weekly basis hundreds of times a year, we realize how impossible of a feat this actually is. Does anyone remember the legend of Sid Finch?
The course at El Paso has 15 holes that are either par 4’s or par 3’s. I spoke to Steve Fulton, the golf professional at El Paso, and he indicated that the golfer is a plus .8 handicap. Obviously, he’s a good golfer. However, Curt Hocker, the golfer who carded the five hole-in-ones did this over 4 rounds of golf. Not withstanding the fact that he did it on some par 4’s, he has only sixty tries to get a hole-in-one. He achieved a rate of over 8% in getting hole-in-ones. I believe that this is impossible. Let me tell you how certain I am.
I would bet the best golfer in the world $1000 and give 100 tries to get a hole-in-one on any par three over 110 yards on any golf course in the world and give him or her even odds to do it and I am quite confident that I would win the bet.
I think that we were just told the story of a golfer named Finch.
