The secret in the yard

Have you ever been walking down the street, or in your yard when you noticed something that made you stop. A sudden glint in the morning light, a flash of silver in the corner of your eye.
Normally most of us go on about our day and don’t give the glint a second thought. But those of us with the most curiousity check out the situation. And when you couple that interst with the passion of a coin collector, sometimes you get a surprise.
Often it’s nothing more than a quarter, or maybe a half-dollar if you get lucky. Then again it’s sometimes an old coin, like a Indian Head Nickel (say from 1916). But on even more rare occasions you wind up with something you just aren’t ever expecting.
Like three 700 year old silver pennies.
That’s exactly what Peter Jones found in his friends yard. 90% silver and dating back to around 1300, the coins are from the time of Edward the First. Of course this was in merry old England.
Still if you think about it, there is always the chance of finding a coin from the American Revolution. That’s just a mere 200+ years ago. If they can find 700 year old coins, why can’t we find a coin just as historical, rare and interesting. The answer is that you can.
Now I’m not suggesting everyone go and dug up their yards. Nor do I believe that every silvery flash is going to be a coins and not a bit of silver colored gum wrapper. But I believe that it’s always worth a look. And if you have a metal detector and some land, why not spend a sunny day in the spring just enjoying the weather and checking out the back yard.
Because just 1 coin, just 100 years old, is well worth all the time and bother. Especially if it gets your name on the internet and the news. Tell me that’s not bragging rights that the Jones’ next door will ever be able to trump. And if coin collecting is a passion, how could you not?
