Old Trucks - Not Everybody Gets It
Submitted by My Viewfinder Blog
Like old barns, I don’t know what it is that attracts me to old trucks. When I see one, something inside of me says, “I have to photograph that!” I know not everyone understands, but since I’m not a pro, just an amateur, I get to shoot what I like.
This is a mid 1950’s Chevrolet pick-up that I’d seen in front of a restaurant in Sylva, and I finally got a chance to photograph it last Friday. (Click on photos to enlarge.) I got the usual strange looks from some guys at an auto repair shop next door, but I’m used to that. I walked around the truck, shooting from various heights and angles while the guys next door watched in utter amazement. When I had gotten what I wanted, I waved, jumped in my truck, and took off. I don’t know what they were thinking about why anybody wanted photos of that old, rusted out Chevy truck. As I said, that kind of thing doesn’t bother me any more; usually it gives me a good laugh. Now, if I could only work up that courage and attitude for photographing people on the street. That one still is a struggle for me.
Just a note: the “Ron Paul” sticker on the front bumper of the truck isn’t a political statement. It was just there, and I don’t want anybody trying to read anything into its presence in the photo. I considered cloning it out, but decided to leave it as an historical artifact.
