We Should Be Free to Speak, Not Disrespect

Can’t help but disagree with the state of today’s media. I blog, so have no gripes there. Qualified people should be able to talk about the topics of their choosing without it having to be their job. Passion and career are so often separated, so I like that people with sound opinions and judgments have a forum to enrich their readers.
What I have a problem with is the empowerment of an unruly readership to slander and hiss at the writers they read. The more qualified, the more exposed a writer is, the worse it gets. Absolutely anyone in the world has an outlet for their negativity and is so intent on expressing it. Why can’t people relax, humbly disagree and move on with their lives?
Reading a Peter Gammons story on ESPN
today, I just got fed up. And I’m sure Mr. Gammons couldn’t care less what people have to say, but I did. Just because people have a forum and a right to say what they wish, it doesn’t mean they should disrespect Gammons’ years of accomplishments and experience.
Besides, why stress yourself and pick apart the work of a writer who cares so deeply about the topic he covers? Respect the passion and enthusiasm, even if it’s not necessarily your cup of tea. We can all learn a thing or two, to say the least, from Gammons. We just have to drop the hostility and listen, rather than reading and immediately preparing a venomous comment.
